In the 2020-21 season, Liverpool had to drop defensive midfielder Fabinho to the backline after a string of departures in the center-back corps. However, in order to use the Brazilian midfielder in his natural position, manager Jurgen Klopp put his trust in young center back duo Nathaniel Phillips and Rhys Williams.

As for Phillips, he remained at the club last season as the fifth choice after a loan move to Bournemouth. Rhys Williams, on the other hand, has been on loan to Swansea and Blackpool, but his development has stalled as he has failed to find success at his new clubs.

According to The Scottish Sun, Aberdeen is interested in the 22-year-old tall center back, and the club’s manager, Barry Robson, is also keen to bring him in. If the move goes through, he would be teammates with former Liverpool midfielder Leighton Clarkson, who moved to Aberdeen this summer.

Williams moved to Blackpool before the start of last season, but his playing time gradually declined and he returned to Liverpool midway through the season. He then made the bench for the games against Crystal Palace and Southampton, but did not get a chance to play.

Next season, he is expected to have a similar difficulty in getting a chance to play for the first team, and will mainly play in the academy matches. Considering his career, it is time for him to change clubs, and a trip to Scotland could be a good choice for a fresh start.

Will the former England U-21 defender leave England and follow the same route as his academy colleagues…?
