Liverpool has strengthened its midfielders by acquiring Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai in quick succession. Liverpool has also begun to look for a physically gifted defensive midfielder, including a left-handed center back, and the recruitment process is not over yet.
On the other hand, Liverpool has also begun to clear out its personnel, releasing academy-born midfielder Leighton Clarkson on a permanent transfer. Another academy graduate, defender Rhys Williams, has also been released on loan, and Nathaniel Phillips is also likely to leave the club.
According to Neil Jones of Covering Liverpool, Thiago Alcantara’s future is also uncertain, and Liverpool is expected to make a decision soon. His contract expires next June, and a sale this summer is inevitable in order to obtain a transfer fee.
No official offer has been received yet, but several clubs are interested in the former Barcelona midfielder, with Fenerbahce also keen.
Even with the addition of rumored midfielders such as Khéphren Thuram and Roméo Lavia, it is hard to imagine the club easily letting go of the experienced former Spanish midfielder after losing James Milner, Navy Keita, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain this summer when their contracts expired.
One possibility would be if both Thuram and Lavia were acquired. With the overstaffing in midfield, the 32-year-old midfielder might be given away in a complete transfer.
At this point, however, he will probably spend next season at Anfield and then look for a new home when his contract expires. However, anything can happen in the transfer market. Will the former Bayern midfielder leave Liverpool this summer?
