Liverpool, who entered St. James’ Park cheered on by supporters as passionate as those at Anfield, were swept up in the atmosphere of the stadium early in the game.
Trent Alexander-Arnold conceded the first goal through an ordinary mistake, and Virgil van Dijk was sent off with a one-shot red card for a careless foul.
Liverpool, forced to play with 10 men as in the previous game, had a drama waiting for them in the final minutes of the match. Darwin Nunez, who came on midway through the game, scored two goals to lead Liverpool to a huge comeback victory.
At the final whistle, the players were delighted with their supporters who had come to the away end of the field.
The Brazilian goalkeeper, Alisson Becker, made some great saves in this match. The most critical one was a powerful shot from close range by Miguel Almiron.
Even when his hand could have been popped, he did not let the ball break the goal with his powerful arm and scraped the ball out of the air.
Reflecting on his save against Newcastle, Liverpool’s goalkeeper said that he was concentrating on the ball in front of him instead of being happy or sad about his brilliant save.
In addition, he reminded the entire team that the “passion” from this game must carry over to the next game.
“I’ve been in football for a long way now and I know that sometimes you can make a really good save and things go towards a good direction for the team. Then sometimes you make an amazing save and things go in a bad direction. So, anything can happen in football, I just try to be focused on the next ball to try to keep helping the team.”
“Today wasn’t easy, not only for me, but for the team for the circumstances; conceding an early goal, having a man sent off. For a long, long way it was really hard to play like that, but for the team it was an amazing performance with 10 men, I think one of the best performances maybe we had in the last months, the last year, I don’t know, but it was a great one. I think we have to take this desire, this passion, this unity that we are creating here and take it forward for the next games.”
