In last summer’s transfer market, Liverpool acquired four players, including Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai. They missed out on Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia, and welcomed experienced Japanese midfielder Wataru Endo at the bottom of their twisting and turning midfield.
He has captained both his former club Stuttgart and the national team, but his age (30) makes it difficult to consider him as a long-term option. Mac Allister has been assigned to play defensive midfielder, but inside half is the right position for him in terms of ability.
Both Caicedo and Lavia are young and have been reportedly linked with young midfielders such as 22-year-old midfielder Andre so far, so it would not be surprising if they make a move for a midfielder in his early 20s next summer.
Some reports have reported interest in Genoa midfielder Morten Frendrup, and Liverpool ECHO reporter Paul Gorst confirmed that this is the case.
“It was one that kind of cropped up a few weeks back now,”
“Speaking to people at the club, people outside the club and whatever else, it seems that he’s one Liverpool are looking at. But I’d caveat that with that they are looking at loads at the moment. I don’t know if there is a particular front-runner for the long-term defensive midfield position.”
“He seems to be having a good year at Genoa. The big drawback for the people I’m speaking to at the club is that the homegrown issue is very much there. But maybe one to keep an eye on. Not for January but maybe in the summer.”
The Anfield Wrap
He is only one of the targets and it has not yet been confirmed whether he will actually make a move.
Liverpool has sent scouting teams to leagues around the world and continues to search for players who are a good fit for Klopp’s style of soccer and can be acquired for the right fee.
He is gaining a reputation in Italy and has played 11 games for the Danish U-21 national team. He is an experienced central midfielder, but has also played a number of games at the bottom of midfield.
Will Liverpool be in the market for the 22-year-old Danish midfielder?
