Liverpool has welcomed no fewer than four new midfielders to its midfield after longtime standouts such as Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, and James Milner left Anfield. The team is still going strong at the turn of the season and continues to make progress toward winning the title.
On the other hand, former Spanish midfielder Thiago Alcantara has yet to play this season and is expected to leave the club on a free transfer as his contract expires in June of this year. To replace the experienced former Barcelona midfielder, Liverpool is interested in German midfielder Joshua Kimmich, who can also play at right back.
The 28-year-old midfielder is under contract until 2025, but the focus is on whether or not to renew that contract. In the unlikely event that he does not extend it, he will be in the final year of his contract and can leave the club next summer without a transfer fee.
German newspaper SportBild’s Christian Falk referred to the player’s possible departure and said that Liverpool is continuing to follow the developments.
“He’s in the final year of his deal at Bayern and they would like to celebrate a purchase price rather than lose him for free,“
“They could lose if he does not extend. And that’s where Manchester City and Liverpool come in. Thiago is always injured at Liverpool FC and his contract is running out, Henderson has left, there is a bit of space in midfield and Jurgen Klopp of course knows how important Kimmich is.“
“Schmadtke, the sporting director, has good connections in the Bundesliga. So, Klopp is also now in the race for Kimmich.“
With Bayern Munich, he has scored 41 goals and provided 100 assists in 370 games, winning the Champions League title.
He was also a mainstay in the German national team, making 82 appearances. Like Thiago, he can operate as an inside half or defensive midfielder.
