Since the announcement of Jurgen Klopp’s retirement, the search for a successor to carry on the German’s achievements at Anfield has been gaining momentum.
Among the various candidates, Xabi Alonso, the Bayer Leverkusen leader, is seen as the frontrunner.
Alonso has been in great form this season, and has shown a strength that has kept even the absolute champions Bayern Munich at bay.
He is rapidly gaining a reputation in Europe, and Bayern, which is rumored to be dismissing Thomas Tuchel, is also said to be looking to sign him.
Fabrizio Romano asserted that Liverpool has shown interest in the coach and is surely hoping to bring him on board as their next manager. He also indicated that he does not want to be a nuisance to a team that is having a historic season.
“Liverpool remain very interested in Xabi Alonso – they keep having contacts, but they also want to be respectful because it’s an important season for Bayer Leverkusen and they don’t want to disturb them.”
“Still, it’s 100% confirmed that Liverpool want to go for Alonso. He’s not the only name on their list, but they are well informed on his contract situation – there is not a proper clause, but a gentleman’s agreement with the club.”
“I’m not sure any concrete talks are imminent because of Leverkusen’s situation, but for sure Alonso is at the top of Liverpool’s list – he’s not the only one, but he’s a strong candidate for the Liverpool job.”
