Jurgen Klopp, who has led Liverpool since 2015, announced his retirement at the end of the season. Xabi Alonso, who was seen as the front-runner to succeed him, has pledged his loyalty to Bayer Leverkusen and has decided to play in the Bundesliga next season.
Sporting’s Ruben Amorim, originally the second favourite, has moved up to the next front-runner and his chances are growing by the day. The 39-year-old, who has shown his skills in Portugal and has plenty of experience on the European stage, is said to be of interest to Barcelona and other clubs.
The Portuguese coach, whose departure this summer is attracting a lot of attention, has mentioned his future coaching career. He said he is not sure if he will stay at his current club beyond next season and that he is now focused on winning titles.
“I can not guarantee that I will stay at Sporting next season.”
“I can’t say that like Xabi Alonso did. We have time to discuss my future, we will do that at the right time.”
“Now focus on winning titles and then we will see what happens.”
