Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso has been reported as the leading candidate to succeed Jurgen Klopp, but the Spanish coach has decided to stay in Germany for another year.
Sporting’s Ruben Amorim, who had also been considered a frontrunner, has jumped to become the most likely target. The Portuguese coach, who has also attracted interest from Chelsea and Bayern Munich, is leading the domestic league table and picked up a valuable ‘three’ points in the recent big game against Benfica.
The coach, who also has plenty of experience on the European stage, is getting closer and closer to stepping up his game this summer.
German Sky Sport Germany’s Florian Plettenberg reports that Liverpool and the 39-year-old manager have reached a verbal agreement and that the manager also wants to take charge at Anfield.
“News Rúben Amorim | Been told there’s a verbal agreement in principle with Liverpool now.”
“Amorim wants to join Liverpool next season and Liverpool was pushing for him in the last weeks.”
“He can sign a contract until 2027 – confirmed”
“Final negotiations with SportingCP are still pending. It‘s not a done deal yet. More steps needed. Deal can still fall through.”
The 39 y/o was also on the list of FC Bayern but it was never advanced. Chelsea have inquired about him.”
