Sporting’s Reuben Amorim has been a candidate for the next manager following the announcement of Jurgen Klopp’s retirement. Xabi Alonso’s decision to stay at Bayer Leverkusen has catapulted him to the top target.
As a player, he played as a midfielder and right-back, rising through the ranks to represent Portugal. He made a total of 306 professional appearances and spent the majority of his time at Benfica. Serbian midfielder Nemanja Matić joined the club in 2011.
The defensive midfielder, who also played for Chelsea and Manchester United, was excited about his Benfica team-mate’s appointment as Liverpool manager, but also reflected on his past as the most helpful person at the club.
“Ruben Amorim is an excellent person, he was one of the people who helped me the most when I arrived at Benfica because he speaks English very well, I hope he hasn’t forgotten how to speak it now,”
“I see Ruben Amorim at a great club, I don’t know if it will be Liverpool.”
“But if it happens, I’m sure he’ll be a great replacement for Klopp because Ruben understands football and has the personality and character to be a great coach, he already is at the moment.”
“I’d like to see him in the Premier League, let’s see what happens from now on.”
