When Scottish-born 60-year-old veteran David Moyes was appointed to lead West Ham United for the second time in December 2019, he broke away from the Old English style of football he had played and developed the club into a European competition contender every season.
However, his influence has begun to wane, with the club finishing in 14th place last season. This season, although they are mid-table in the Premier League, they continue to play in a shaky manner, with many games, such as the recent game against Crystal Palace, being lost by a large number of goals.
Moyes’ contract expires at the end of the season and there has been much speculation about his departure. West Ham are making moves in case the Scottish manager leaves, with Athletic reporting that active discussions are underway to bring in Sporting’s Ruben Amorim, who is also a candidate to be Liverpool’s next manager.
Although Julen Lopetegui has also been floated as a candidate, the priority seems to be the Portuguese manager, who could also play a key role in the club’s future plans. The report also said that taking charge of the London club would be attractive.
Meanwhile, the Reds may have shifted their attention to other targets in the heated battle for Amorim, with Liverpool said to be targeting the 39-year-old manager, but reportedly unlikely to be a candidate to replace outgoing manager Jurgen Klopp.
The German manager has not only an impressive record at the club, but also has a great relationship with the supporters. There are very few young managers who can shoulder that burden and take the club further. Who will Liverpool be looking to?
