With Jurgen Klopp’s departure at the end of the season, Liverpool continued to search for a commander to take over the powerhouse club. For a time, the departure of Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso attracted attention, but after he announced he would remain at the club next season, supporters’ eyes turned to Sporting’s Ruben Amorim.
The young Portuguese manager, who has a reputation for developing youngsters, was listed high on the shortlist and was touted by the media as the most likely candidate.
However, at the same time as the manager held talks with West Ham United leaders, Feyenoord’s Arne Slot emerged as the leading candidate.
The two clubs have already agreed on a compensation package and the Dutch manager is keen to take charge at Anfield, so an official announcement from the club is imminent.
Meanwhile, Amorim was not selected by Liverpool as a result, and Melissa Reddy of the international media outlet Sky Sport explains why.
“He had ticked quite a few of the criteria to get onto the shortlist but the big sticking point was that his playing philosophy was so different,”
“He likes to use three at the back – that doesn’t really stack up with Liverpool’s squad and their comforts in doing that.”
“Also his long-term vision didn’t align with the Liverpool way.”
“And, remember, Liverpool play the same way through all the age groups up, so you don’t want to disrupt that.”
