Liverpool are looking to leverage their centre-backs, with Joel Matip leaving Anfield and Virgil Van Dijk also ageing. They are looking for new young defenders in the summer transfer window and at least one is expected to join the team.
Liverpool, who also made a move to secure a centre-back last year, had been targeting England defender Levi Colwill, who was in contract extension talks with Chelsea, but talks of a move died after he signed a long-term deal with the London club.
Liverpool remain interested and are keeping a close eye on developments at his current club. However, Ben Jacobs (sports journalist) has ruled out the player leaving in the summer and reported that both Chelsea and Liverpool understand the situation.
“He’s missed out on the Euro squad, and even though the player, if he can’t get into the England setup – or if for whatever reason he’s not playing regularly at Chelsea under Enzo Maresca, or playing out of position – he may start to at least look at options.”
“But the Chelsea stance is very much an automatic rejection at this point for summer 2024, and Liverpool know that, so they are not engaging.”
“All of the noise is obviously coming from elsewhere because Liverpool are entirely focused on other targets. Again, it’s not because they don’t appreciate Colwill, it’s because they simply don’t think that anything is possible in 2024.”
