"Aiming to strengthen at centre-back" Liverpool launch search for Stuttgart defender Waldemar Anton Transfers

Former Cameroon defender Joel Matip, who joined from Schalke and has long supported Liverpool’s final line, leaves Anfield when his contract expires. Despite the emergence of Jarell Quansah, the club is still looking for a new defender in order to have the right number of centre-backs.

The top priority is a left-back, but right-backs are also often reported as candidates. And Liverpool, who strengthened their squad from Stuttgart in last summer’s transfer window, are once again eyeing the club.

According to Sport Bild, Liverpool are investigating Stuttgart’s stalwart German defender Waldemar Anton, who could join the defensive line-up this summer.

The defender from Uzbekistan, who is under contract until June 2027, has made 37 appearances this season. He was given the captain’s mark and made a significant contribution to the team that fended off Bayern Munich to finish second in the Bundesliga.

The 27-year-old centre-back, who is also of interest to Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen in Germany, is said to have a €22.5 million release clause in his contract, with clubs looking to acquire him having to pay more than that.

Liverpool brought Japanese midfielder Wataru Endo to Anfield from the same club last summer, but will they reinforce from Mercedes-Benz Arena for the second year in a row…?
