Newcastle United were forced to sell players by 30 June this year to avoid breaching the Premier League’s “profitability and sustainability rules” (PSR), which had been pointed out since the season.
Among others, the departure of key players with high transfer fee expectations has been rumoured since the season.
England international Anthony Gordon was seen as a possible target, along with Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimarães, but with the deadline fast approaching, Liverpool held negotiations with his club for a move.
However, negotiations were frustrated by a number of unacceptable aspects, including the amount demanded and the terms of the player’s transfer.
Newcastle, who eventually sold the other players, are expected to continue to fight alongside their mainstays in the new season.
“Anthony Gordon was denied his dream move to his boyhood club after Liverpool failed to make a bid that matched Newcastle United’s asking price.”
“Telegraph Sport understands that Gordon had been extremely keen on the move and his head has been turned by the interest shown in him.”
“At one stage the England international, who has only one minute at the European Championship so far, thought he would be signing for Liverpool, but after conversations between the two clubs, a bid did not materialise.”
He uses his incredible speed to get behind opposing defences, and last season he obtained a rapid development through the Premier League and Champions League, scoring 12 goals and assisting 11 in 48 games. He has evolved into one of England’s leading wingers and was selected for the national team at EURO 2024.
Before making his mark at Everton, he was a youth player at Liverpool. Will he ever realise his then unfulfilled dream.
And will he one day lead Anfield to joy, even though it will be a difficult transfer in many respects, having played so well for his local rivals…?
