Last summer, Liverpool tried to contact England defender Levi Colwill, who was in contract renewal talks with Chelsea. However, none of the centre-backs signed long-term contracts with the London club he has been with since childhood.
With Joel Matip leaving and Virgil van Dijk joining the veteran ranks, the search for a new centre-back is in full swing. And the latest to be in the centre of the conversation is Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori, who had a productive season with Bologna.
Juventus are also keen on the 22-year-old left-back, who, according to Fabrizio Romano, is a favourite of Liverpool’s new sporting director, Richard Hughes, who has been scouting him for his past performances for the club he played for.
“All these clubs have been scouting him because he’s been fantastic for Bologna and also at the Euros for Italy he is doing really well. For example, Liverpool director Richard Hughes, when he was at Bournemouth, he used to scout Calafiori when he was playing for Roma and Basel.”
“He is a player Hughes always appreciated, but at the moment, I am not aware of anything concrete between Liverpool and Bologna.”
