Coupled with the sudden moves of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho, Liverpool made several midfield acquisitions last summer and implemented a strengthening of the midfield. Last season, which saw a return of energy to the midfield, the club returned to third place in the Premier League.
Liverpool, who will return to the Champions League in the new season, are reportedly interested in a defensive midfielder who is a little thin with only Japan midfielder Wataru Endo and Spain U-21 midfielder Stefan Bajcetic.
According to O Jogo, Liverpool, along with Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal, are tracking Portuguese midfielder João Neves, who plays for Benfica.
Despite being 19 years old, he has already been on the pitch for the full national team for nine games and is expected to be a gem of the future in the country.
Last season, he also grabbed a regular place in the team, making 55 appearances across the Champions League and Europa League, scoring three goals and providing two assists.
He is the type of playmaker who can create games from the bottom of midfield, and despite his small stature, he can carry the ball with a solid technique and low centre of gravity. His potential is obvious to all and he could be a valuable asset for any club.
However, Benfica are not willing to let him go cheaply and will have to pay an exorbitant transfer fee. It’s an unaffordable amount for Liverpool, but not one that the Manchester side can’t raise, and he could be on his way to England in the near future.
At the moment, there are no signs of a move this summer, but could this be the Portuguese starlet’s first attempt at the Premier League…?
