Liverpool are looking to fill the void left by former Cameroon defender Joel Matip, who has been a long-time supporter of Liverpool’s final line under Jurgen Klopp’s regime, after he left the team. Virgil Van Dijk is also getting older and an overall rejuvenation of the final line is needed.
Although 22-year-old defender Sepp van den Berg, who was very successful on loan last season, has returned to the club, the player himself has volunteered to move to a club where he can compete for a regular place and is increasingly likely to leave in the transfer market this summer.
Various names have been floated as potential new centre-backs, with Crystal Palace defender Marc Guéhi, who will start for England at EURO 2024, reportedly one of the targets, according to Fabrizio Romano.
According to what he told Caught Offside, Liverpool made enquiries in March this year to find out what was going on with the player, but nothing has moved on since then and no negotiations or offers have been made.
Liverpool are said to be pursuing a left-back amongst others, but are also believed to be eyeing 18-year-old French defender Leny Yoro, who has recently been linked with a move to Real Madrid, and are targeting promising future defenders, regardless of their dominant foot.
He is an absolute regular at Crystal Palace and has made 111 appearances for the club. He is not a tall centre-back, but he is a strong defender against opponents, a good passer and runner, and is one of the most modern defenders in the game.
At just 24 years of age, he could be the next big thing under new manager Arne Slot, but at the moment it doesn’t look like Liverpool are making a move for the player, but will he have a future playing at Anfield…?
