Liverpool’s commitment to new football under new manager Arne Slot has made it a priority to leverage the midfield at the heart of the team. With various targets being floated, Real Sociedad’s Spanish midfielder Martín Zubimendi was singled out.

Negotiations seemed to be going well, but came to an abrupt end: the 25-year-old midfielder refused to go to Anfield and decided to stay at La Real.

Liverpool still haven’t reinforced anyone, but according to Paul Joyce of The Times, it seems unlikely that they will move for a new midfielder.

“It is unlikely at this stage that Liverpool will switch their attention to an alternative midfield target, with Zubimendi having been targeted because he suited a specific profile of No6 for Slot’s squad,”

“Having been told that he would be prepared to leave in this window, Liverpool made an opportunistic attempt to sign Zubimendi.”

“The view of the club is that they have Ryan Gravenberch and Curtis Jones as potential partners for Alexis Mac Allister, while Dominik Szoboszlai and Trent Alexander-Arnold can also play there. Wataru Endo is a more destructive No6 and looks unsuited to the demands of the new coach having not been favoured by Slot during pre-season. There is also 17-year-old Trey Nyoni, who is highly-rated.”

Liverpool have not acquired anyone so far, not just a midfielder, but can they run in and bring a mainstay player into the team as the transfer market deadline looms…?
