27-year-old defender Joe Gomez, who joined Liverpool from Charlton in 2015, is now the oldest player in the first team. The defender, who will enter his tenth year at Anfield next year, reinvigorated his career as a left-back last season and returned to the England squad.
The London-born centre-back, who did not start at EURO 2024, has the utility to also play right-back and defensive midfielder, and has been a valuable asset for Liverpool this season.
On the other hand, he is not guaranteed a regular place in the team. He is fourth best at centre-back, and has not impressed at either left or right back, where he is not a starter, and the England defender, who wants to play every week, may or may not want to move on.
According to international football’s Football Insider, Liverpool could consider selling the player for a fee of between £40m and £45m, with Aston Villa showing interest. He was included in negotiations over the transfer of Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon this summer as a trade piece.
He has made a total of 224 appearances for Anfield, but has yet to score a goal. In the Premier League-winning 2019/20 season, he was partnered by Dutch defender Filsil van Dijk and performed outstandingly.
However, injuries have plagued him for much of the time and he has yet to become an absolute regular, and at 27 years of age, it is only natural that he would be looking for a starting berth and it is no surprise that he is considering leaving Liverpool.
Will Liverpool really make the decision to let go of their oldest defender…?
