Liverpool tried to acquire Real Sociedad midfielder Martín Zubimendi, but the Spanish midfielder, who also played in EURO 2024, refused to move to Anfield, pledging his loyalty to the club where he grew up from the academy. He did not shift his gaze to other targets and ended the market without welcoming anyone into midfield.
Amid reports that La Real could move for a midfielder again, a new name has emerged. Four clubs – Liverpool, Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur and Borussia Dortmund – have expressed interest in 24-year-old midfielder Angel Gomes, who recently made his debut for England, according to The Sun.
Newcastle, in particular, plan to get serious and are reportedly set to make a move for him in this winter’s transfer window. The London-born midfielder has a contract with his club Lille until June 2025 coming up and is likely to be a relatively cheap acquisition this January.
The 24-year-old midfielder, who could be available on a free transfer if he waits another six months, has not blossomed at Manchester United, but has been a mainstay at the French club since his full transfer in 2020, scoring eight goals and providing 18 assists in 118 games.
The diminutive midfielder caught the eye of new Three Lions coach Lee Carsley and made a midway appearance against Ireland in the Nations League. In the following game against Finland, he was on the pitch from the start of the match and played until the end of the game.
It is unlikely that Liverpool will make a positive move for the player at this point, but what is going to happen?
