After finishing third in the Premier League last season, Liverpool returned to the Champions League stage. In a competition that had changed dramatically with the introduction of the new format, they took on AC Milan at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza in the opening round.
After losing their most recent game against Nottingham Forest, they were expected to bounce back and conceded the first goal early in the opening period against the prestigious Italian side. However, they scored three goals, including two from the centre-backs, to secure a comeback victory.
After the game, they exchanged uniforms with their opponents, and Hungarian midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai was caught on the pitch, and when asked why he wore the AC Milan uniform, he confessed to being a fan of the club.
“Why did I wear the Milan shirt? Because I’m a Milan fan, all my friends know that. In my house in Budapest there is a photo of me with Paolo Maldini when my grandmother took me to meet him,”
Under Arne Slot, the 23-year-old midfielder has been an attacking midfielder in both defence and attack, and although I dare say he would like to leave more numbers in goals and assists, he has also contributed to a club that has kept many clean sheets so far by going back deep and defending well.
The young midfielder is still a part of Hungarian history, but will he be able to join the legends at Anfield?
