With new manager Arne Slot, Liverpool were looking to secure Spanish midfielder Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad. However, the players’ side decided to stay, which prevented them from strengthening their midfield.
On the other hand, the club acquired Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili with the aim of investing in the future and, with the transfer deadline looming, also managed to add Italian international Federico Chiesa to the squad. The attackers were strengthened.
According to CaughtOffside, Liverpool are eyeing three players from Bayer Leverkusen for further development. Their targets are German midfielder Florian Wirtz, Dutch midfielder Jeremy Frimpong and Argentine midfielder Ezequiel Palacios.
The German attacking midfielder was thought to be ready to step up this summer after his great performances last season, but he stayed at the club that qualified for the Champions League. He also plays a double role in the country’s full national team alongside 21-year-old midfielder Jamal Musiala, contributing an assist to a goal up front.
The 23-year-old Dutch side attacker has developed his talent by playing in a high position. Last season he scored 14 goals and provided 12 assists in 47 games, an astonishing tally that had mega clubs, including Liverpool, all reaching out to him. However, this summer’s transfer window saw him stay in the Bundesliga.
The 25-year-old midfielder, who moved to Leverkusen from Liber Plate in the winter of 2020, can also play at the bottom of midfield, which coach Slott is looking for. He has also made 31 appearances for Argentina, but his pecking order in the team is not high.
According to the paper’s sources, Wirtz has a demand of €100 million, Frimpong has a release clause of £34 million and Palacios is asking for €60 million, so based on his ability, it seems that the only target Liverpool would move for is the small-sided Dutch attacker.
Each of these has strong clubs interested and Liverpool are not in a position to catch a single one. The transfer fee could be inflated and it is unlikely that Liverpool will actively participate in the battle.
Will Liverpool ever pull off a member of the team that won last season’s undefeated championship…?
