Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson Becker is Liverpool’s reigning defender. Irish goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher is also in reserve, and until last season, veteran goalkeeper Adrian also provided backup, giving the club a solid goalkeeping line-up.
The season has started with 23-year-old goalkeeper Vitezslav Jaros in charge of the third goalkeeping position, and he has not dropped down a level. They have also secured Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili as Alisson’s successor and have begun to build a team for the future.
John Achterberg, who was goalkeeping coach at Liverpool until last season, revealed his past plans for reinforcements and confessed that he had tried to acquire Brazilian goalkeeper Neto on multiple occasions, but had failed on each occasion.
“I looked at everything every year when there were new goalies coming in the leagues,”
“I’d try to find them, make lists on that and then if I found goalkeepers who played the way we wanted to play I’d come back to that.”
“Neto was a goalkeeper we tried a few times to get as well, but that didn’t come off.”
“He could play the way we wanted to play. When you’re at Liverpool there aren’t too many at the top level to find.”

The 35-year-old goalkeeper, who has made one appearance for Brazil in 2018, has been on loan at Arsenal this season after moving between clubs including Fiorentina, Juventus, Valencia, Barcelona and Bournemouth.
Due to his age, it seems unlikely that he will be playing at Anfield in the future, but he could be an interesting option for a mental support role like Adrian.
