Spanish midfielder Martin Zubimendi, whom manager Arne Slot had hoped to acquire, has decided to stay at Real Sociedad. Having failed to secure a defensive midfielder, Liverpool have continued to use Dutch midfielder Ryan Gravenberch as their ‘No.6’.
The 22-year-old young midfielder has evolved game by game, moving from inside-half until last season to a more central midfield position, and has rapidly developed into one of the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League.
His performances have been nothing short of spectacular since his days at Bayern Munich and his first year at Liverpool.
Woolwich-born Ian Wright, who scored goals for Crystal Palace and Arsenal in his playing days and made more than 30 appearances for England, was surprised by his performance so far, but said Liverpool had hit the ‘jackpot’ and He was a great admirer of his ability.
“You could say that with Zubimendi not going through, they could have really unearthed the one for themselves now,”
“Because when you watch those games, and obviously, we want to see him [Gravenberch] against the maybe the top three, top four.”
“And if he’s putting in those kind of performances, then obviously Liverpool have struck gold because he seems to have everything, He has got all the attributes.”
