‘The switch [to Liverpool] was going to happen’, Anthony Gordon told his England team-mates

Liverpool have been serious about securing a defensive midfielder in the summer transfer window.

At the same time, they also looked at new attackers, resulting in the arrival of Italian international Federico Chiesa at Anfield, who had been out of the squad at Juventus.

However, perhaps Chiesa would not have joined the club: during EURO 2024, Liverpool held negotiations with Newcastle United for England international Anthony Gordon. Despite discussions, including terms that included Joe Gomez, a transfer was never completed.

The 23-year-old winger, who has been a member of Liverpool’s academy in the past and emerged at Everton, is keen to return to Merseyside.

He told his Three Lions teammates that a move would happen, The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards revealed.

“There is no point pretending otherwise. [Anthony] Gordon was keen on a move to his boyhood club in the summer and even told team-mates, while on international duty with England, that the switch [to Liverpool] was going to happen.”

With his current contract expiring in June 2026, and with less than a year left on it next summer, it was thought that talk of a move to Liverpool would flare up again, but it appears that he has agreed a new contract with Newcastle and will be at St James’ Park for some time to come.

The Italian winger, who played for Fiorentina and Juventus, could be set to secure a new attacker depending on the departure of Mohamed Salah, although a lot depends on how well he does in England.

With the acquisition of Gordon, who was said to be the favourite, becoming more difficult, is there a future for Liverpool to bring another winger into the team next summer…?
