Liverpool have intensified their search for a long-term replacement for Andy Robertson. The Scotland captain is now 30 years old and it is time for the side-back to find a new style of play for a side that requires intense up-and-down movement during games.
He has been struggling to adjust to the conditions following the impact of EURO 2024, and is increasingly losing regular game time to reserve defender Kostas Tsimikas. Nevertheless, his ability remains top class and he remains irreplaceable.
According to TBR Football, Liverpool are interested in US defender Antonee Robinson, who plays for Fulham in the Premier League, and are planning a cash plus player swap trade. The Greek defender has reportedly been selected as a member of that trade.
The 27-year-old side-back, who grew up in Everton’s lower divisions, moved to the London club after spells at Bolton and Wigan. He made 162 appearances for the club and developed into one of the best left-backs in England, receiving interest from strong clubs.
Although the transfer fee, said to be £40 million, is not high, his age is questionable. It is more likely that he will settle for a position similar to that of the Greek national team rather than a long-term successor, and it is hard to shake the impression that he will simply replace players.
Of the candidates, 21-year-old defender Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth would be the ideal defender. His young age, close relationship with Richard Hughes, who has been Liverpool’s sporting director since this season, and ease of negotiation make him a prime target.
However, there is no reason for Liverpool to rush into acquiring a left-back in the first place. After a thorough assessment, the possibility of a move in next summer’s transfer window cannot be ruled out, but it seems unlikely that they will step on the accelerator this winter.
