Liverpool have one of the best goalkeepers in the world in Alisson Becker, Caoimhin Kelleher and Vítězslav Jaroš. Kelleher has performed well during Alisson’s absence this season and has not felt the absence of his guardian deity.
However, it is likely that next season will see a revamped goalkeeping squad. The Irish goalkeeper is likely to leave the club as Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, on loan at Valencia, officially joins the club, while the Czech goalkeeper is also expected to leave Anfield at the end of his contract.
A regular battle between Alisson and Mamardashvili is expected, but the club would like to have a capable third goalkeeper as well, in case of an emergency.
According to international media outlet Sheffield Wednesday News, Liverpool are looking at 19-year-old goalkeeper Pierce Charles, who plays for Sheffield Wednesday.
The young defender also made his debut for Northern Ireland in October 2024, and Liverpool scouts have reportedly watched the national team and checked out how the goalkeeper plays.
In the past, he has also honed his skills in Manchester City’s academy and started four Carabao Cup matches. He has not started in the Championship and his playing time has not been great, but considering his age, he leaves room for growth in the future.
He is also under contract until June 2025, which is an advantage as he can be acquired on a free transfer. The most ideal way would be for him to further develop his skills in the academy before being promoted to the first team, rather than being suddenly given the third-choice role.
Will Reds welcome a young goalkeeper born in 2005 into the team?
