‘I was close to leaving Liverpool’, 27-year-old defender Joe Gomez reflects on the events of the summer Transfers

London-born defender Joe Gomez joined Liverpool in the summer of 2015 after being lured away by his extraordinary potential. As a youngster, he was often used at right-back or left-back, but as he got older, he also became a partner for Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk.

The 27-year-old centre-back, who had a long spell out with a serious injury, also contributed to the team’s victories last season at left-back and as a defensive midfielder, and performed well enough to earn a return to the England squad, but rumours of his departure were rife this summer.

Reports were circulating that Liverpool were in the market for Antony Gordon, including the player as a trade partner, but the player himself confessed that he was on the verge of leaving Anfield. Meanwhile, he also revealed his love for his club.

“I was close to leaving Liverpool last summer, it was definitely for real.”

“But my focus was always on the club. I know how blessed I am to be here. It will be 10 years next summer. I don’t take that for granted.”

“I love Liverpool.”

This season he came on when French defender Ibrahima Konate was injured and showed solid defence on the pitch. Under Arne Slott, he is third in the centre-back corps, but remains a valuable asset who can also play on the flanks when needed.

Rumours of Van Dijk’s replacement being secured have been reported, and competition in the defensive ranks could intensify next year. It is normal for players to look at a move away to cement a regular place in the team, but will the oldest player in the current squad continue to play at Anfield next season and beyond…?
