Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk was nearing the end of his contract until June 2025. There was talk of a contract renewal this summer, and although it looked as though it would be settled sooner, 2024 is coming to an end.
While he has frequently spoken of his love for Liverpool in the media and appeared to be leaning towards staying, there has been a development that is good news for supporters.
Spanish outlet Fichajes reported that an agreement had been reached with the centre-back, who will be 34 next year, on a three-year contract until June 2028, with an official announcement to be made soon.
He joined Liverpool from Southampton in January 2018. Immediately after joining, he played a key role in the final line and continued to lead the defenders, being on the pitch every week, except for a period when he was out for a long time after suffering a serious cruciate ligament rupture.
Although there were seasons when his performance declined due to the serious injury, he made a full recovery from last season.
He has continued to support Arne Slot’s good form this season with his dominant performances. He has also shown his leadership skills as team captain.
