England defender Trent Alexander-Arnold was discovered by Jurgen Klopp, who led Liverpool until last season, made his first-team debut and has now developed into a world-class right-back.

With his contract with Liverpool nearing expiry and rumours of a move to Real Madrid, his uninspiring performance against Manchester United fuelled the rumours and attracted much criticism.

At his first inaugural press conference as head of Red Bull Global Football, his mentor up to last season humourously responded that he was still debating the 26-year-old defender’s defensive abilities and said he should also make a big fuss when he played well.

“And then Trent, yeah, and he could finally learn defending, eh? I can’t believe that you all discuss this still.”

“It’s so poor, and I’m really happy I’m not part of that.”

“Yes, he didn’t play well against Manchester United, but if you would make such a fuss of him when he plays well, like you make a fuss of it when he doesn’t play well, that would be really a cool planet.”

He was born in Liverpool and rose to the position of vice-captain at that club. He has also won the Premier League and Champions League, and lifted domestic cup trophies such as the FA Cup and League Cup.

All he can do in England is win the championship again and be named captain, but going to Real Madrid, with its strong football politics, could bring him one step closer to winning the Ballon d’Or.

The England defender is coming to a crucial decision in his career, but whichever he chooses, there is no doubting his ability as a player.
