Aside from leveraging their midfielders, Liverpool was also in pursuit of a left-handed center back during this summer’s transfer window. Chelsea defender Levi Colwill and Tottenham defender Mickey van de Ven (then of Wolfsburg) were reported to be prime targets.
As a result, the club has been unable to land a center back due to the unexpected departures of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho, and has invested time and money in rebuilding its midfield.
The club is expected to once again focus on securing a player in the same position this winter, although 20-year-old defender Jarell Quansah has emerged.
While Sporting defender Goncalo Inácio and Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly are reportedly interested in the left-back position, there are daily reports from Brazil that Liverpool is keen on 20-year-old defender Lucas Beraldo.
The Brazilian outlet UOL, while affirming that the young left-handed center back from Sao Paulo is still a developing player, suggested that Liverpool could not ignore his high hidden potential and could be in the market for him.
“Because he has only been a professional for a year and a few months and only has experience of Brazilian soccer, he still needs to be tested a little more before he can really fight for a place in the Canarinho team. But Beraldo has plenty of potential. And Liverpool, the club favored to take him away from São Paulo, know that very well.”
He has just been promoted to a regular role in the Brazilian domestic league, and his lack of experience in the top team is undeniable.
When weighing the options against players with experience playing in Europe, the priority would be players with experience playing in major European tournaments.
It seems true that Liverpool is interested, but the priority would not be high. First, they would have to secure a ready-made center back, and then, if still necessary, they would move to acquire a young gem.
