Throughout last summer, Liverpool pursued left-handed center backs. In addition to Chelsea defender Levi Colwill, other young center backs in their early 20s, such as Sporting defender Goncalo Inacio, have been mentioned as candidates, and the names of various other defenders, not just left-handers, have been floating around in the media.
This is due to the uncertain future of the veteran center backs on the roster: 32-year-old defender Joel Matip is likely to leave with his contract expiring at the end of the season, and the departure of Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk, who is under contract until June 2025, is also uncertain.
According to Sport Bild, Premier League sides such as Liverpool, Arsenal, and Manchester United have shown interest in Frankfurt’s Ecuadorian defender William Pacho, and have sent scouts to Bundesliga games.
Other clubs such as Napoli and Real Madrid are also keeping a close eye on his movements, and the possibility of a battle in this summer’s transfer market is growing, according to the report.
Frankfurt is expected to demand as much as £51 million from any club looking to acquire the 22-year-old center back.
The Ecuadorian defender, who is under contract until June 2028, joined the club from Royal Antwerp last summer. He has made 28 appearances so far this season. As the mainstay of the back line, he has become an indispensable player for the team.
This is his first season in a top-level league, and there is no denying that he still lacks experience.
Still, as a talented young center back, it would not be surprising to see him playing in a league of a higher level than the Bundesliga from next season onward.
Will Liverpool really be in the market for a new midfielder this summer? And could that target be the Frankfurt defender…?
