Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Wataru Endo, who joined the club last summer, are playing regularly for Liverpool. Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott are also developing, while Trent Alexander-Arnold is increasingly being used in midfield.

The club also has a well-stocked midfield squad with other promising youngsters. In addition, Fabio Carvalho and Tyler Morton have performed well on loan and the future is bright under a new manager.

Nevertheless, media reports of interest in midfielders such as Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala have not disappeared.

According to Portuguese newspaper O Jogo, Liverpool are plotting a move for Argentine U-23 midfielder Alan Varela, who moved to Porto from Boca Juniors last summer.

Liverpool, who have been rumoured to be interested in the player on several occasions, have continued their scouting at the Estadio do Dragon and scouted the game against Vitoria SC, where the 22-year-old midfielder played 56 minutes in a game that the home team lost.

The Argentinian midfielder, who has sought a new home in Portugal, has made 36 appearances in Liga Bewin and the Champions League this season and has made a good start to his first European challenge, making his presence felt at the bottom of midfield.

He has a contract with his club until June 2028, with a £60 million release clause in his contract. It’s not a cheap fee, but it’s a transfer fee that Liverpool could raise and could be an interesting option if they want to further strengthen their midfield.

Will Liverpool really start in earnest to acquire the young Argentinian midfielder?
