Liverpool are back in the hunt for Wolves midfielder João Gomes this summer Transfers

Thiago Alcantara has left Liverpool at the end of the season, but young prospects such as Stefan Bajcetic and James McConnell are in the pipeline, while Tyler Morton, who played on loan at Hull City, is also looking for first-team action.

The midfielders acquired in last summer’s transfer window are competing regularly, so there is no particular need to strengthen the midfield. Nevertheless, Liverpool’s interest in midfielders does not seem to have waned, with a renewed focus on players who are staking their claim in the Premier League.

According to Anfield Watch, Liverpool have also renewed their interest in 23-year-old Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder João Gomes, who was highly rated for his ability when he moved from Flamengo.

The Brazilian midfielder, who is under contract until June 2028, moved to the Premier League in the winter of 2023. He has been a mainstay this season and has been on the pitch for 37 games, making his debut for Brazil in March 2024, a steady step up in his career.

His committed style of play allows him to cover a wide area in midfield, while in attack he contributes to the team with his high passing sense and technique with his feet. He is gaining a growing reputation in England and has become an integral part of Wolves’ squad.

Realistically, however, Liverpool are unlikely to approach the player again, and their priority is only attackers and centre-backs. The budget is not generous and it is difficult to spend a lot of money on midfielders in terms of budget allocations.

Despite this background, why would Liverpool look at and try to acquire a Brazilian midfielder…?
