Liverpool’s acquisition of several midfielders last summer rejuvenated the midfield from the days when Jordan Henderson and Fabinho anchored the midfield. The pressing across the pitch also returned, and Liverpool returned to third place in the Premier League.
The club was in contention for the championship until the end of the season and was temporarily in a position to challenge for the fourth title, which was largely due to the high number of injuries.
However, with Thiago Alcántara out and Japan midfielder Wataru Endo not getting any younger at 31, there are reports that Liverpool could be in the market for a defensive midfielder.
Meanwhile, Fabio Carvalho and Tyler Morton, who were very successful on loan last season, may get their chance this pre-season. The latter, in particular, has played brilliantly for Blackburn and Hull City over two seasons, and his future as a regular contender under Arne Slott’s regime cannot be ruled out.
However, options other than a future at Anfield have also emerged. According to The Times, RB Leipzig are interested in the 21-year-old midfielder, and are looking for a full transfer rather than a loan.
The young midfielder, who has also made three appearances for England U-21s, has played nearly 100 games for the first team and is experienced despite the Championship.
He has enough qualities to make a mark on German soil and could be an interesting choice for a new challenge.
He has little experience in the Premier League and £20 million seems a little steep, but will he play in the Bundesliga next season…?
