Portuguese U-21 midfielder Fabio Carvalho, who was recognised as one of the best young midfielders in England after a spectacular performance in the Championship during his time at Fulham, has struggled since moving to Anfield.
He failed to inspire confidence under Jurgen Klopp and spent last season on loan. He spent the second half of the season at Hull City, where he scored nine goals, and was expected to play a central role in the new Arne Slot regime.
However, throughout pre-season, he has been searching for his best position. Basically, he is used as a left winger, as he was during the Klopp era, but he does not seem to be playing comfortably.
According to Daily Mail reporter Lewis Steele, there seems to be a discrepancy between the manager and the players in terms of their perception of the position in which they can reach their potential.
“Fabio Carvalho held talks with Arne Slot on how best to force himself into Liverpool’s plans.”
“Slot reckons he’s a winger, Carvalho sees his best position as a No 10.”
“Big chance for him to impress, though there is lots of interest elsewhere in signing him.”
If he continues to play on the left wing, the player could show his dissatisfaction and apply for a transfer. In a Liverpool club with so many world-class wingers, it is extremely difficult to secure a regular place in the team, especially if it is not your strongest position.
He is at an age where he could evolve if he can learn to play on the wing, but what does the future hold for the Portuguese-born player, who is at a turning point in his career at Liverpool?
