Former Schalke defender Joel Matip ended his playing career at Liverpool at the end of last season. He remains a free agent following the expiry of his contract, but Bayer Leverkusen, who were unrivalled in the Bundesliga last season, have expressed interest in the player.
According to CaughtOffside, the German club are not the only candidates, with Premier League clubs Everton and Fulham also exploring the possibility of acquiring the player.
All three clubs have had discussions with his agent and will now move on to the phase of deciding where he would be best suited to move to, including in terms of terms and conditions.
Although he has only played for two clubs, Schalke and Liverpool, the 32-year-old centre-back, who has made 256 appearances in Germany and 201 in England, knows the sweet and the sour at the top level and could be a valuable asset at any club.
As he is originally from Liverpool, it is questionable whether he would choose a rival team on Merseyside, but with his contract out, he is unlikely to get that much of a boo-boo.
