27-year-old defender Joe Gomez had a breakthrough year last season as a left-back and defensive midfielder rather than a centre-back. He also returned to the England national team and was selected for EURO 2024, although he did not start.
This season, however, Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas are back in condition and the role they are expected to play at the bottom of midfield is changing. At centre-back, they are behind Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Jarell Quansah, and could be beaten in the pecking order by Sepp van den Berg.
For manager Arne Slott, the utility of being able to play in all positions in the final line is valuable, and he could well stay at Anfield. On the other hand, he wants regular treatment and is said to be open to leaving.
According to The Daily Telegraph, Aston Villa, who are closing in on Brazilian defender Diego Carlos’ move to Fulham, have listed Liverpool defender Joe Gomez and Feyenoord defender Lutsharel Geertruida as possible replacements.
Manager Unai Emery has praised the versatility of both players to play in a variety of positions, including centre-back, side-back and defensive midfielder, and is expected to look to sign a new defender if the 31-year-old veteran defender leaves the club.
Dutch international Lutsharel Geertruida has one year remaining on his contract and has been linked with a move to RB Leipzig. Some media outlets have been quick to praise a move to Liverpool due to his relationship with manager Arne Slott, but recently we have not seen any rumours of such a move.
With just a few weeks to go in the summer transfer window, clubs will begin to make their moves. Will the England defender volunteer for a new challenge and will a move within the Premier League be on the cards…?
