PSV withdraw from the battle for Sepp van den Berg, unable to afford to pay Liverpool's asking price Transfers

Liverpool defender Sepp van den Berg has been the subject of interest from several clubs, mainly in the Bundesliga, after his great performances for Mainz last season. Besides Mainz, Stuttgart, Hoffenheim, Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Monchengladbach and Wolfsburg are also interested in his movements.

New head coach Arne Slot has been heavily linked with the 22-year-old centre-back in pre-season and hopes he can fill the void left by Joel Matip, while he is open to a move if the right offer arrives. And Liverpool are demanding £20 million.

The player himself has made no secret of his desire to play every week and is said to have volunteered to move to the club, but Dutch club PSV Eindhoven, one of the potential new destinations, have withdrawn from the fray. The main reason for this was the tremendous transfer fee for the club, Dutch outlet Telegraaf reported.

The club’s highest fee to date was €14.5 million paid for Mexican international Hirving Lozano in 2023. It will be difficult to raise more than that and the Eredivisie club will shift their eyes to other targets.

According to the paper, Liverpool do not want to make a decision right now and want to decide on his departure once they have confirmed what their defensive line-up will look like.

The Reds are expected to be in the market for a new centre-back before the transfer window opens, and the Dutch defender’s future will depend on whether a deal is concluded.

What sort of career will the 22-year-old centre-back have in store for him?
