27-year-old defender Joe Gomez, who also returned to the England national team after a very successful campaign last season, is now in the ninth year of his Liverpool career and will celebrate his tenth anniversary in July 2025.
He is the oldest member of the current squad and the only one who has known Jurgen Klopp since the beginning of his regime.
In a team that has undergone a major shake-up since that time, he still plays an important role as a utility player who can play at left and right back, centre-back and in the depths of midfield. However, his playing time on the pitch will be limited unless he suffers a series of injuries, as he did last season.
The England defender has been linked with a move in the past, but he may leave before his tenth year at Anfield.
According to The Times, Gomez is exploring his options before the transfer window closes at the end of the month, with Chelsea, Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Fulham as well as several clubs from outside England interested.
His current contract runs until June 2027. Although he has made a total of 224 appearances for Liverpool, he did not even make the squad for this season’s Premier League opener against Ipswich Town, reigniting news surrounding his departure.
He is not high up the pecking order in the centre-back pecking order and is currently fourth in the pecking order. There are rumours of a new defender, which could further limit his availability. The left-backs also have two regulars, and Connor Bradley is the back-up at right-back.
It is no surprise that the 27-year-old centre-back is seeking a new club, as he is concerned about his current position. Depending on how much Liverpool demand for a transfer fee, perhaps a blitz move for Gomez could be on the cards.
