Liverpool's interest in former French U-21 defender Mohamed Simakan continues with interest from Juventus Transfers

Before and since the start of this summer transfer window, Liverpool have been linked with a number of players. Initially, it was thought that the club would be serious about acquiring an attacker or centre-back, but they made a defensive midfielder a top priority and set out to acquire Spanish midfielder Martin Zubimendi.

That attempt failed, but they are close to signing Valencia’s Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, and talks are likely to be concluded on a one-year loan back.

And not a few other players have been reported as targets.

There has also been reported interest in RB Leipzig’s 24-year-old defender Mohamed Simakan to fill the centre-back position after veteran defender Joel Matip left at the end of his contract.

Although even those rumours have now died down, Sky Sport Germany’s Philipp Hinze reiterates that the interest is ongoing.

“Once again confirmed: Liverpool FC continue to have interest in Leipzig’s defender Mo Simakan. It is not advanced or concrete, but Simakan is still on Liverpool’s list. Juventus also keeping an eye on the Frenchman.”

“Simakan is not unhappy in Leipzig. However, the Frenchman is open to the next step. There is generally a lot of interest from Europe – but no one been concrete so far.”

A midfield defender who can also operate at right-back, he has made 121 appearances for the Bundesliga club, scoring seven goals and providing 13 assists, and has experience in the Champions League and Europa League.

With the departure of 27-year-old defender Joe Gomez, who has returned to the England national team, the worst-case scenario is a lack of talent in the final line.

Nevertheless, with a left-footed centre-back said to be a priority for Liverpool, is there a future for the former France U-21 defender to land at Anfield this summer…?
