Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen were interested in acquiring him, but a move never materialised, partly due to German defender Jonathan Tah not leaving the club. The Bundesliga revival did not materialise and the club is now looking for a new home.
According to Sky Sports, West Ham United are interested in the 33-year-old centre-back and have made contact with the player’s agent.
The London club, under new manager Julen Lopetegui, are building a new team, replacing their core defenders from last season, including Moroccan defender Nayef Aguerd, former Italian defender Angelo Ogbonna and French defender Kurt Zouma.
They are considering whether to add a former Liverpool defender, who has played a lot of games in the Premier League, to the team in a centre-back group that has lost experience compared to last season, and a top-level defender may come to London to help them through the long season.
