Before the transfer window opened this summer, Liverpool were reportedly looking to secure a new attacker. However, when the lid opened, Arne Slot’s first target was a defensive midfielder, Real Sociedad’s Spanish midfielder Martin Zubimendi.
He eventually failed to land him, and next he secured Valencia’s Georgia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili as a long-term replacement for Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson Becker. With the transfer deadline looming, the club finally made a move for an attacker, bringing in Italian international Federico Chiesa from Juventus.
According to Corriere dello Sport, just as with Chiesa, just before the transfer deadline, Liverpool were also in the market for Nigerian international Victor Osimhen, who was at Napoli at the time, but abandoned their move due to high salary demands.
Throughout the summer, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain were in the market for the 25-year-old striker. Of these, the London club were keen and continued to eye the Nigerian international, who scored at a threatening pace with 76 goals in 133 Serie A games, as a replacement for the decision-making-challenged Nicholas Jackson.
However, Chelsea and Napoli were unable to reach an agreement and eventually settled on a loan move to Galatasaray. Saudi Arabia were also believed to have received interest, but he preferred to remain in Europe and his new home was set to be in Turkey.
For Liverpool, centre-forward was never a priority position. Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez are available and Cody Gakpo can also play. The main priority was a left-handed right winger, and the chances of contacting the Nigerian forward, who would require an exorbitant transfer fee in addition to a hefty salary, were almost nil.
It is not clear whether Liverpool were actually in the market for the player, but it seems safe to assume that the highly paid player will not be coming to Anfield in the future.
