Joe Gomez never wanted to leave Liverpool...A British journalist reveals the story behind the summer Transfers

After a string of injuries last season, 27-year-old defender Joe Gomez broke new ground as a left-back and took on new challenges as a defensive midfielder, helping the team in various positions in the absence of regulars.

Under new manager Arne Slot, he was treated as a fourth-choice centre-back and was reported to be leaving in the summer in order to secure his place in the team.

Liverpool, who are in the market for England international Anthony Gordon, had also agreed to hand over the player as part of their terms.

After negotiations with Newcastle fell through, interest from several Premier League clubs was reported and an exit seemed imminent, but he settled for remaining at Liverpool. He will be hoping to appeal to the Dutchman’s commanders in order to secure a starting place at Anfield.

Graeme Bailey revealed that the former Charlton defender had not volunteered to leave the club in the summer transfer window, but also said he was keen to compete for a regular place at Liverpool after talks with manager Slot.

“He wasn’t particularly pushing to leave,”

“I’m told he was concerned after being left out of that first squad but I know he’s then had talks with Arne Slot and he’s been assured by what he’s heard.”

“There was interest out there and I think if he really wanted to leave he would have agitated for it. I think he was happy with what he was told,”

“Nevertheless, he’s probably one to watch for January if what was told to him this summer doesn’t pan out. But I think Slot likes him and he’s part of his plans.”
