Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Florian Wirtz suffered a serious injury in the 2021/22 season with a cruciate ligament tear, which forced him to miss over 250 days. He has bounced back from the injury in a big way, scoring 18 goals and providing 20 assists in 49 games last season, contributing significantly to Bayer Leverkusen’s unbeaten Bundesliga title run.
Alongside Jamal Musiala, the 21-year-old midfielder is also a future attacking midfielder for Germany, scoring four goals in 25 games, and many of Europe’s top clubs, including Liverpool and Real Madrid, have shown interest in the 21-year-old midfielder.
The player was a hot property in the summer transfer window but ultimately stayed with the team, but Liverpool made an offer earlier this year, according to German newspaper Kicker. The fee was a whopping £77.7 million, but the young midfielder was not inclined to make the move.
New Liverpool manager Arne Slot wanted to secure a defensive midfielder and did everything in his power to acquire Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi. Unfortunately, he was unable to convince him, but it is said that he still has not given up on strengthening his midfield depth.
At the beginning of this year, when Jurgen Klopp was in charge and Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes had not yet joined the organisation, it is unlikely that they would move for major reinforcements just before the team structure changes.
Liverpool have acquired Italian international Federico Chiesa, but it would not be surprising if they embarked on further front-line reinforcements. This is due to the uncertain departure of Egypt’s Mohamed Salah, with rumours of a move for Luis Diaz and others.
However, with the young German midfielder inevitably going to require a higher fee next year, it will be difficult for Liverpool to gain the upper hand in the battle. So what reinforcement plans will the Reds be working on this winter and next summer…?
