Liverpool’s ongoing search for a long-term successor to Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk has narrowed its sights on a centre-back who can handle the left side of the park, with Sporting defender Goncalo Inácio and Paris Saint-Germain defender William Pacho among those who have expressed interest.
Throughout the summer transfer window, Liverpool’s interest in Crystal Palace defender Marc Guéhi was also frequently reported, with rumours of a possible move to secure the 24-year-old centre-back, who also played a major role in EURO 2024.
As a result, Liverpool never got serious, but Newcastle United, also in the Premier League, made at least four separate offers, but were unable to show enough terms to convince Crystal Palace that a move could be made.
According to Football Insider, with Newcastle likely to try again this winter, the England defender would prefer to move to a bigger club than the club and is feeling more inclined to play at Anfield.
Since joining his current club from Chelsea in the summer of 2021, he has become a fixture in the heart of the final line, making over 100 appearances and has also started 18 games on the pitch for the Three Lions.
He has never experienced the Champions League or other European competitions at club level, but he has represented his country in the EURO 2024 final.
At his ripe old age, the time is approaching when it would be perfect for him to step up from a club that is finding it difficult to break into the upper echelons of the Premier League. With less than a year left on his contract next summer, his club will be in a position where they will be less likely to demand a large transfer fee.
