27-year-old winger Federico Chiesa’s career has been on a downward slope since the European Championships, where he played a major role for Italy, partly due to injuries.
He lost his place with the arrival of new coach Thiago Motta and moved to Liverpool for a cheap fee.
He was forced to work out on a separate menu in Juventus’ pre-season, which did not allow him to prepare satisfactorily.
Perhaps because of this, he has only played three games for Liverpool this season and is currently out injured. He has yet to make up for his expected role as a reserve for Egyptian international Mohamed Salah.
Nevertheless, he has only just arrived in England. Despite this, news of a rumoured return to Serie A has been circulating from the Italian side.
Inter Milan, AC Milan and AS Roma were also reported to be eyeing a loan move, but manager Arne Slot flatly denied that he would be released within six months.
“[Parting ways with Chiesa] hasn’t gone through my mind at all,”
“First and foremost is that he gets fit again and then we can see where he is.”
“He missed pre-season [with Liverpool] and in pre-season [with Juventus] he was on low intensity sessions as he had to train with three or four players separate from the group.”
“Going from then to a high-intensity league, to a high-intensity playing style is difficult in general for every player, but especially if you had a pre-season like this.”
“We knew this before and we knew we had to be really careful to adjust where we could to his individual needs.”
“But it hasn’t been perfect yet so we are trying to find the right way of building him up without overloading him. That has been difficult up until now. I have full confidence that will happen. Let’s let him first be fit.”
The former Juventus winger, who hasn’t even tested his strength in the Premier League and has plenty of experience in the national team, is essential to fight through a long season. He can play on both sides of the ball and is on his way to getting back to the best performances he showed at EURO 2020.
We eagerly await the day when we will see the Italian forward back to full fitness and on the pitch.
