In Arne Slot’s first summer in charge, Liverpool made the defensive midfielder a priority target and came close to acquiring Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi. The transfer never went through, but there are still scattered reports of interest.
Meanwhile, interest in various midfielders has also been reported since the transfer window period, in different leagues, both attacking and defensive. The list of players who have been rumoured so far would be long, but a new name has been added to the list.
According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, the Merseyside club are keen on Spanish midfielder Oihan Sancet, who plays a central role at Athletic Bilbao, and could be in the market for him.
The 24-year-old midfielder came through the club’s youth system and joined the first team in 2020. He has been a regular in midfield this season, scoring eight goals at the end of 16 games throughout La Liga and Europa League.
His main position is as an attacking midfielder, and his goal tally this season has already exceeded last season’s total, and his scoring ability in front of goal is improving.
The problem, however, is that he has a long contract remaining until June 2032 and his release clause is set at €80 million. A discount is almost impossible and it is unlikely that Liverpool would offer more than the same amount for one player.
Will the Reds make their interest in the Spanish midfielder more concrete?
