Since his move from Southampton, Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk has turned Liverpool’s final line into a strength.
He has continued to perform at a high level this season as one of the only centre-backs in the world who combines top-level ability in every aspect of his game, including strong physicality, aerial prowess, footwork, positioning and accurate feeding.
At 33, the veteran defender is entering the final year of his contract with Liverpool. Talks with the club are ongoing, but no good news has been announced at the moment.
The player, who wears the captain’s mark for both the Dutch national team and the club, stressed his love for the Anfield club and supporters and said that he would be able to continue playing at the top level for the next few years. However, he was vague about his future.
“I love the club, the club loves me. I love the fans, the fans love me and it is a very good foundation to be successful. In my opinion I can play for another three, four years at least at the highest level. We will see what the future brings.”

The players are positive about staying and both sides are still negotiating to renew their contracts.
It is hard to say what aspects of the deal have not been settled, but many supporters would like to see a new contract signed, and the disadvantages of losing a defensive leader are greater.
Ajax midfielder Jordan Henderson, who lifted numerous trophies as captain under Jurgen Klopp, described Van Dijk as a top player and also said a new contract would be a good deal for his old club.
“Top [of the list],”
“I feel like Virgil could play until 39 or 40 if he wanted to. For me, if they give him a contract for two, three, four years, it would be a pretty good bit of business for the club.”
