Uruguayan international Darwin Nunez joined Liverpool from Benfica in 2022. Under his mentor Jurgen Klopp, he scored 18 goals and provided 13 assists in 54 games last season, and expectations were high for a third season in which he would surpass his first year.
However, Arne Slot has seen him drop down the pecking order and he has also been confused by his role as a centre-forward, scoring only six goals in 27 games. He has been joined in the regular competition by Luis Diaz, whose reduced playing time has fuelled transfer rumours.
According to Simon Phillips (English journalist), Chelsea, who have been following the Uruguayan striker’s progress since his goal-scoring days in Portugal, have rekindled their interest.
They have listed him, along with Ipswich Town forward Liam Delap, who is said to have carried out two enquiries, and have turned their attention to the Liverpool striker as one of their boosters for the upcoming season.
The London club attempted to sign the player a year ago, but the move did not materialise as the German manager in charge of the team at the time closed the door on the possibility. Interest has been smouldering since then, and the club has indicated that it will try again over the next year.
If Liverpool move to secure a new forward, they may be willing to sell the 25-year-old striker, who is not an absolute starter, in order to raise the funds.
And if the Saudis, with their ample financial resources, were to make a serious bid, there is no denying that an offer would be difficult to turn down.
Will Chelsea ever reinforce Liverpool with a new attacker…?
